Year 2 Computational Chemistry Lab

Assessment:

must be completed by 6pm on the Friday of your lab
  • You should go to blackboard to complete the quiz, which can be found in the year 2 lab folder. Here is a direct link.
  • You can stop and save your quiz answers. You will get an instant grade after completing the quiz.
  • Last year students requested an outline of the quiz questions which they can work on while doing the lab, and then use to complete the quiz a bit later, so here is a word document that contains the quiz "questions" that you can fill out as you progress through the lab.
  • Template word document "DOI's" to copy and pase your DOI links (to your completed calculations) into. Submit this document to blackboard.

Help:

  • Your first port of call should be the "troubleshooting" pages
  • Demonstrators are available 2-5 on the 3 days the lab is running, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.
  • Computational labs are a bit different from other labs: we expect you to ASK FOR HELP, don't just keep repeating calculations. important If you cannot see, or don't understand why your job has failed there is no point in randomly changing something and repeating calculations. Learning happens through trying something, making mistakes and fixing it, in this lab, this is not a failure, it is a valid learning process.
  • You are expected to complete the lab within the lab hours. However, as the software is on all of the chemistry department computers you can complete calculations or the quiz outside of lab hours. Support is provided ONLY during lab hours. Any questions outside of lab hours will be redirected to demonstrators working in the lab. Any problems with running jobs outside of lab hours will be at your own risk, for example if the HPC SCAN servers are down. No extensions will be granted for these systems not working outside of lab hours.
  • Staff supervision/administration of the lab will be 2-3 on Tuesday and 3-4 on Thursday and Friday.
  • If you are ill or have a personal/family emergency contact Dr Hunt, requests prior to any absence will be treated far more favourably than those post-absence. Any absences of more than one lab period will require a medical certificate and you will be directed to your year tutors for pastoral support.

Feedback:

  • During the lab you will receive feedback as part of the process, this will be via the demonstrators when they answer your questions.
  • You can ask the demonstrators to provide rapid-feedback on Part 1 of the lab, this is recommended to ensure you know what is expected from you.
  • If you would like additional feeback on your blackboard quiz, contact Dr Hunt between 6-10 June (after the whole group has completed the lab). She will arrange for a feedback meeting with a demonstrator.
